UT Intramural Field

This 38-acre project was constructed where the former UT Golf Range and Married Student Housing Apartments once stood. After the apartments were demolished, over 200,000 cubic yards of soil were moved to provide areas for the intended sports fields, volleyball courts, walking trails, a central complex, and a maintenance facility.

The site consists of four natural-turf multi-purpose fields and four artificial-turf multi-purpose fields. There are two dedicated softball fields with dugouts and three NCAA-regulation sand volleyball courts. Over 20 mature existing trees were protected and incorporated into the landscaping. The site is engineered to collect 100% of rainfall to be used for irrigation. Several retaining walls were constructed using unique faux stone concrete block. Over one mile of walking trail was incorporated into the design, allowing access via the City of Knoxville’s Greenway Trail system.

Coordination of the work on this project, a showpiece for campus recreational sports, highlights our ability to work with numerous trades to complete a project. Logistical coordination was critical in order to maintain the project schedule without painting ourselves into a corner. We were able to complete the major work within the footprint of the fields, courts, and buildings by chasing each trade out through the bottlenecked entrance into the site from the parking lot.
