About Knox CNU 131 I-40 Overpass Over Holston River Bridge

This project included extensive structural repairs to the I-40 bridge Over the Holston River and John Sevier Highway. The construction joints at both ends of the bridge were replaced with new Watson-Bowman modular joints. The entire bridge deck was exposed, chain-dragged, and repaired as necessary for both partial and full-depth repairs. All the structural concrete repairs were poured with 18-hour concrete. Structural steel members were replaced and added in every span of the bridge. Most of these repairs required field drilling thick steel plates with magnetic drills. The structural steel repairs had to be accessed by hanging cables and woven steel mesh from bent to bent to create a temporary work platform. All these structural repairs occurred while two lanes in each direction remained open to traffic. When the structural work was completed, the project was finished with new asphalt paving.
